What is FIRE? (Financial Independence, Retire Early)

FIRE stands for "Financial Independence, Retire Early." It's a movement focused on extreme saving and investing with the goal of retiring decades earlier than the traditional retirement age.

The core idea is to save a large portion of your income (often 50% or more) and invest it. Once your investments reach a certain point—known as your "FIRE number"—you can live off the investment returns indefinitely.

Your FIRE number is typically calculated as 25 times your expected annual spending. This is based on the "4% rule," which suggests you can safely withdraw 4% of your investment portfolio each year without running out of money. This calculator helps you find that number and estimates how long it will take to get there.
